Defensive Driver Training Course

 

Only for current holders of a valid C1; EC1 and EC license

Aligned to Unit Standards 123253 and 123254


DAY 1

For all C1; EC1 and EC license holders - Curriculum for Day 1:

Day 1 covers Embedded Knowledge as prescribed by the relevant Unit Standards.

After completing Day 1, the learner will be able to explain the following vehicle systems or components:

  • Electrical System

  • Cooling System

  • Lubrication System

  • Fuel Line System

  • Brake

  • The Clutch

  • The Gearbox

  • Differential Lock

  • Tyres

  • Retardation devices

  • Cab instruments and warning devices

 

The learner will also have knowledge regarding the following:

  • The Road Traffic Act 1993: Pertaining to the Operation of a vehicle

  • The effect that weather/road/traffic conditions as stipulated in the range statement, have on a vehicle's performance and the necessary driver actions to be taken

  • Procedures for reporting all emergencies as set out in the range statement

  • Application of fire extinguishers fitted on the vehicle

  • Operational rationale for vehicle inspection

  • Defect Reporting procedure

  • Measures to minimise the risk of hi-jacking

  • Measures to maximize cost-effectiveness and efficient operation of the vehicle

  • The effects that internal psychological responses (e.g. stress) or other medical conditions have on driving performance.

 

For Code EC Drivers only - continuation of Curriculum for Day 1:

Coupling and uncoupling procedures:

  • Coupling semi-trailer (Steps 1-10)

  • Un-coupling semi-trailer (Steps 1-2)

The effects of the following aspects on the stability of the vehicle combination:

  • Mass of individual units in the combination

  • Speed of the combination

  • Direction of travel

  • Road surface

  • Load distribution

 

DAY 2

For C1; EC1 and EC license holders - Curriculum for Day 2:

Defensive Driving (The new driving philosophy)

  • The RADAR System

  • Observation techniques

  • Managing Speed and Space

  • Safe Downhill Driving

  • Night Driving

  • Driving in Smoke and Fog

  • Front tire blowout

  • On-vehicle communication

  • The K53 Driving System

  • Traffic Emergencies

  • Accident Procedures

  • Asset Protection

  • Hijackings

 

DAY 3

For C1; EC1 and EC license holders - Curriculum for Day 3:

  • Competence Evaluation

Operational Procedures:

  • Pre-trip procedures

  • On-route procedures

  • Post-trip procedures

  • K53 Road Test (Approx. 20 minutes per Driver)

  • Manoeuvring Checklist

  • Student's Programme Evaluation

  • Certification Ceremony

 

Dates and Venues

Venues: Should a venue need to be hired, the venue costs will need to be added to the client's invoice. However, should the training be conducted on the client's premises, no extra fees are payable for the venue.

Dates: Dates will be arranged as per the client's request; alternatively MPower Training Solutions (Pty) Ltd will communicate the respective dates on which Defensive Driving will be presented, subject to interest shown in the course.

 

Clients are welcome to negotiate with MPower Training Solutions to only present certain parts of the programme, which will lead to a reduction in price per learners. Please contact us should you wish to make such an arrangement
